Climbing the Dana Couloir, Yosemite National Park
The Dana Couloir, in Yosemite National Park, is roughly 1000 feet of 40-50 degree hard snow and ice, with a remnant glacier at the bottom. The couloir varies from 20-60 feet wide, and offers amazing views of the moraine lakes in Glacier Canyon, and Saddlebag Lake beyond. It's also a good illustration of the "red Sierra" (mostly slate), vs. the "white Sierra" (mostly granite). Where the two come together there are often minerals found, and within a few miles of this photo there are old gold, silver, tungsten, and lead mines.
