Bisti Layers
Typical Bisti layering...sandstone above mudstone, with seams of coal. Notice the red color of this coal seam? It indicates that this seam burned underground, for centuries. Back in the 1980's, this area was planned for coal strip mining...but it was instead preserved as a wilderness area by President Ronald Reagan (back when Republicans used to do that sort of thing).
